Beta-lactamase is an enzyme produced by bacteria that confers resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring. They are classified into four classes (A, B, C, D) based on their structure and mechanism of action. Beta-lactamases are a major cause of antibiotic resistance, especially among Gram-negative bacteria.
Hydrolyzes the beta-lactam ring of beta-lactam antibiotics, inactivating their antibacterial properties. Serine beta-lactamases form an acyl-enzyme intermediate, while metallo-beta-lactamases utilize Zn²⁺ ions to activate water molecules for direct hydrolysis.
