Beta-lactamase Class D (OXA)

Target
OXA
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine hydrolase, β-lactamase
01

Overview

Class D β-lactamases, also known as oxacillinases (OXAs), are a diverse group of serine-based enzymes produced by bacteria that confer resistance to β-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the β-lactam ring, thereby inactivating the antibiotic. These enzymes are found predominantly in Gram-negative bacteria but also in some Gram-positive species. They are clinically significant due to their ability to hydrolyze penicillins, cephalosporins, and even carbapenems, contributing to multidrug resistance in hospital-acquired infections.
