Overview

Beta-lactamase enzymes are bacterial enzymes that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring. Ambler class D beta-lactamases, also known as oxacillinases (OXA-type beta-lactamases), are serine-based enzymes. They exhibit significant genetic diversity, with variants showing different substrate specificities, including penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems. Many Class D beta-lactamase genes are plasmid-borne, facilitating horizontal gene transfer and accelerating the spread of resistance traits.
