Beta-lactamase SHV-1 is a class A, group 2b serine beta-lactamase enzyme that confers resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring. It is primarily associated with Klebsiella pneumoniae and has spread to other enterobacterial species via plasmids. While SHV-1 itself primarily hydrolyzes penicillins and early-generation cephalosporins, it is a precursor to many ESBLs that confer resistance to broader-spectrum antibiotics.
Hydrolyzes the beta-lactam ring of beta-lactam antibiotics, rendering them ineffective. Inhibited by beta-lactamase inhibitors.
