Overview

Beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) is the major whey protein in cow, sheep, and many other mammalian milks, though absent in human milk[3]. It is a small lipocalin protein (~18.4 kDa) capable of binding a variety of small hydrophobic molecules, including vitamins (A and D), fatty acids, cholesterol, and aromatic compounds, likely playing a role in their transport within milk[1][2][3][4]. BLG can bind iron through siderophores and may assist immune cells by transporting micronutrients, potentially influencing immune tolerance[3]. Beyond its nutritional roles, BLG is a well-recognized milk allergen in humans, significant in pediatric allergy and food safety[3]. It is not a recognized therapeutic target such as an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or transcription factor, and it currently lacks interacting drugs or well-defined mechanisms of action in therapy[2][3][4].
