Beta-lactoglobulin-like protein

Molecular classification
Lipocalin family, Carrier protein, Other
01

Overview

Beta-lactoglobulin-like protein refers to a member of the lipocalin family, closely related to the well-known beta-lactoglobulin found in ruminant (e.g., cow and sheep) milk, which functions as the main whey protein and acts as a carrier for small hydrophobic molecules. The human genome encodes a beta-lactoglobulin-like gene (ENSG00000236543, LOC102723971), but this gene is considered a pseudogene in humans and does not produce a functional protein. In other mammals, beta-lactoglobulin is a major milk protein with well-documented ligand-binding and carrier activities, possible roles in neonatal nutrition, and is a recognized allergen. Its biological function in humans is not established, and it is not a recognized therapeutic target.
