Beta-microseminoprotein (MSMB)

Target
MSMB
Molecular classification
Other, immunoglobulin binding factor family, secreted protein
01

Overview

Beta-microseminoprotein (MSMB) is an abundant, secretory protein mainly produced by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland and released into seminal plasma. It belongs to the immunoglobulin binding factor family and exhibits inhibin-like activity. As a major constituent of seminal plasma, MSMB has been implicated in immunomodulation, regulation of apoptosis, and suppression of tumor growth and metastasis. Its expression is robust in normal prostate tissue and significantly decreased or absent in advanced and hormone-refractory prostate cancers, suggesting a role as a tumor suppressor. Genetic variation in MSMB, most notably the rs10993994 SNP, is linked to prostate cancer susceptibility and lower protein expression. MSMB may serve as both a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for prostate cancer, but is not known to be directly targeted by therapeutic drugs or agents.
