Beta-phenethylamine (β-PEA) is a naturally occurring trace amine and neuromodulator in the human brain. It acts primarily by binding to specific receptor sites, most notably the trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1), but it also interacts with other molecular targets, including mitochondrial complexes and serotonin receptors. β-PEA modulates monoaminergic neurotransmission and has been implicated in mood regulation. Its binding to mitochondrial complexes can potentially inhibit electron transport.
