Target intelligence / Profile preview
Beta-sarcoglycan is a transmembrane protein that is part of the sarcoglycan complex within the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC). It is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of muscle fibers by linking the cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. Mutations in the SGCB gene cause limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2E (LGMD2E), characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting. Beta-sarcoglycan is primarily expressed in striated and smooth muscles.
