Target intelligence / Profile preview
The bicarbonate transporter protein family includes multiple membrane-bound transporters (notably the SLC4 family) that mediate the movement of bicarbonate and associated ions (mainly sodium and chloride) across cell membranes. Their main physiological roles involve regulation of intracellular and extracellular pH, acid-base balance, and participation in processes like bicarbonate secretion/absorption in kidneys and various tissues. The SLC4 family consists of both sodium-dependent cotransporters (such as NBCe1, encoded by SLC4A4) and anion exchangers (such as AE1), with tissue-specific distribution including kidney, pancreas, nervous system, and eye. Defects in these proteins are implicated in several inherited and acquired human diseases, especially renal tubular acidosis, corneal dystrophy, and some neurological disorders. For structured, target-specific data, refer to family members such as Electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 1 (NBCe1; SLC4A4) and Sodium bicarbonate transporter-like protein 11 (SLC4A11; BTR1) for gene- and disease-specific annotations.
Inhibitors: Bind to and block transporter function, affecting intracellular/extracellular pH and bicarbonate transport. Indirect modulators: Affect associated carbonic anhydrase interaction and alter rate of HCO₃⁻ movement or conversion.
