Overview

BICD1 antisense RNA 1 (BICD1-AS1) is an antisense long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the BICD1 locus. Antisense RNAs such as BICD1-AS1 regulate gene expression primarily by interacting with their sense transcripts or modulating chromatin organization at or near their locus of origin[3]. These molecules often function in cis, influencing the expression level, splicing, or stability of the paired “sense” protein-coding RNA (in this case, BICD1), but they may act in trans at other loci as well[3]. Antisense lncRNAs are generally considered regulators of gene expression and epigenetic state rather than direct therapeutic targets such as receptors, enzymes, or ion channels. There is little evidence that BICD1-AS1 directly participates in disease or is itself targeted by drugs, nor is it a biomarker in validated clinical use based on currently available data. Additional context: - The BICD1 protein, not the antisense RNA, is a dynein adaptor involved in vesicular trafficking, nervous system development, and cancer prognosis[1][4][5]. - Entries in the GWAS catalog list BICD1-AS1 as a genetic locus but do not designate it as a direct disease gene or therapeutic target[6]. - The functional role of BICD1-AS1 specifically has not been described in detail in current literature, but its class (antisense lncRNA) suggests a role in transcriptional regulation rather than direct involvement in signal transduction or enzymatic activity[3]. No known drugs or clinical interventions currently target BICD1-AS1 specifically, nor is it validated as a therapeutic, safety, or selection biomarker.
