Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus enrichment refers to the process of increasing the abundance of two major genera of probiotic bacteria, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, in the gut microbiome via supplementation or dietary interventions. These bacteria are essential members of the normal intestinal flora, especially in infants, and are associated with diverse health benefits including improving gut barrier function, fermenting indigestible carbohydrates to yield beneficial metabolites (short-chain fatty acids), stimulating immune regulation, and protecting against gastrointestinal infections. Although these bacteria are frequently therapeutic agents in probiotic formulations, "enrichment" itself is not considered a single molecular target but rather a therapeutic goal pursued for prevention or management of several conditions linked to dysbiosis.
