Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is a robust, gram-positive lactic acid bacterium found in the human colon with notable resilience against oxygen, acidity, and temperature. It ferments glucose to produce lactic and acetic acids, supporting a healthy gut microbiome. Widely used as a probiotic in dairy products and supplements, B. lactis promotes digestive health, improves immune defense, helps maintain gut barrier integrity, and demonstrates beneficial effects in conditions such as IBS, constipation, diarrhea, metabolic syndrome, and some inflammatory diseases. Its common commercial strains, such as BB-12® and HN019, are extensively clinically studied. While not a molecular therapeutic target, it is a functional microbe administered for health support; its clinical efficacy and taxonomy have undergone refinement, currently classified as a subspecies of Bifidobacterium animalis.
Colonizes the gut to confer health benefits. Produces lactic and acetic acid, lowering colonic pH to inhibit pathogens. Strengthens intestinal barrier and modulates immune function (promoting regulatory T cells, increasing beneficial antibodies). Competes with and inhibits growth of pathogenic organisms, viruses, and bacteria. Enhances metabolic functions (improves glucose tolerance, reduces fat accumulation).
