Overview

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BS01 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain widely utilized as a live biotherapeutic agent to support gastrointestinal and immunological health. Unlike traditional molecular targets such as receptors or enzymes, BS01 is a whole microorganism that functions by colonizing the human gut and modulating the local microbiome environment. It is clinically recognized for its ability to improve intestinal transit and alleviate symptoms of functional constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Mechanistically, the strain produces short-chain fatty acids like acetate and lactate, which lower intestinal pH and nourish colonocytes while inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Furthermore, BS01 has been shown to interact with the host immune system by promoting monocyte polarization and strengthening the intestinal epithelial barrier. While it is generally regarded as safe (GRAS), its therapeutic application focuses on the restoration of microbial balance rather than the inhibition or activation of a specific human protein.
