Overview

Bifidobacterium longum BCMC®02120 is a specific probiotic strain of the Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium Bifidobacterium longum, primarily known as a key component of the multi-strain Microbial Cell Preparation (MCP®) HEXBIO® [3, 4]. Biologically, the strain functions by modulating the intestinal microbiota, enhancing the integrity of the intestinal barrier, and producing essential metabolites like short-chain fatty acids [10, 12]. It possesses significant bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity, which plays a role in increasing water secretion into the colon and stimulating gut motility to alleviate constipation [3, 6]. Clinically, this strain has been extensively studied for its ability to improve gastrointestinal health in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and those suffering from the side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy [7, 10, 13]. While it is not a traditional molecular target like a receptor, it serves as a therapeutic agent that interacts with the host's immune system and existing microbiota to restore homeostasis and reduce systemic inflammation [10, 21].

Mechanism of action

Bifidobacterium longum BCMC®02120 exerts its effects through several mechanisms: it produces bile salt hydrolase (BSH) to convert bile salts into primary bile acids which stimulate gut motility; it stabilizes the intestinal barrier by maintaining tight junction proteins like zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1); it produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate; and it modulates the host immune system by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 while potentially increasing anti-inflammatory signals [3, 8, 10].
