Overview

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis BCMC 02129 is a specialized probiotic strain predominantly found in the gastrointestinal tract of breastfed infants [11, 15]. Rather than being a therapeutic target molecule such as a receptor or enzyme, it is a live biotherapeutic agent used to modulate the gut microbiome and host physiology [2, 12]. The strain is highly efficient at fermenting human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which results in the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate that lower intestinal pH and inhibit pathogen colonization [3, 4]. BCMC 02129 plays a critical role in the maturation of the infant immune system and the maintenance of intestinal barrier integrity by producing anti-inflammatory metabolites like indole-3-lactic acid [9, 19]. In clinical practice, it is often utilized in multi-strain probiotic formulations to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and to support gut health in post-surgical colorectal cancer patients [5, 17]. Its therapeutic effects are primarily driven by the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the competitive exclusion of luminal pathogens [7, 11]. While it is not a drug target, its population can be significantly depleted by broad-spectrum antibiotics, requiring therapeutic monitoring or replenishment [15, 21].
