The Bifidobacterium population refers collectively to the community of Bifidobacterium species inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract, predominantly in the large intestine of mammals, including humans. These are Gram-positive, anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacteria classified in the phylum Actinobacteria. They are among the earliest and dominant colonizers in the guts of breastfed infants and play beneficial roles in host health, such as modulating immune responses, producing health-promoting metabolites (including acetate and lactate), contributing to digestion and nutrient absorption, and protecting against pathogenic microbes.
