Overview

Bile acid pool composition" refers to the relative amounts and types of bile acids present in the total circulating pool within an organism, primarily humans. The human bile acid pool is composed mainly of two primary bile acids—cholic acid (CA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA)—which together account for about 80% of the total. Secondary bile acids such as deoxycholic acid (DCA) and lithocholic/ursodeoxycholic acids are formed by bacterial action in the intestine and make up smaller fractions[3][4]. Bile acids are synthesized from cholesterol in the liver, conjugated with glycine or taurine to increase solubility, secreted into bile, aid in fat digestion via micelle formation, then reabsorbed through enterohepatic circulation[1][2]. The size and composition of this pool influence cholesterol metabolism, biliary lipid secretion, gallstone risk, liver function, and intestinal health. Changes or imbalances in this composition can be associated with various diseases including cholestatic liver diseases and metabolic syndromes[2][3]. ---
