Biliverdin Reductase B (BLVRB) is an NADPH-dependent cytosolic enzyme crucial in heme metabolism, catalyzing the reduction of biliverdin to bilirubin. It acts as a flavin reductase, reducing flavins, biliverdins (excluding biliverdin IXα), pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), and ferric ion. BLVRB also functions as a protein nitrosyltransferase, catalyzing the nitrosylation of cysteine residues on target proteins. It plays a vital role in cellular redox homeostasis and has clinical relevance as a biomarker for vascular injury and stroke risk. It is more active during fetal development compared to postnatal life.
