Binding

The term 'Binding' refers to the fundamental physicochemical process by which a molecule (ligand) forms a complex with another molecule (usually a protein, nucleic acid, or receptor). It is a generic descriptor of molecular association rather than a specific biological entity, protein, or therapeutic target. In pharmacology, binding is the prerequisite step for drug action, characterizing the affinity between a therapeutic agent and its actual molecular target. Because it represents a general mechanism of interaction rather than a discrete molecule with a unique genetic sequence or structure, it cannot be classified as a therapeutic target itself. Consequently, 'Binding' lacks specific clinical indications, interacting drugs, or associated biomarkers as it is used to describe the state of interaction across all of biochemistry (IUPAC, 1997; Pharmacological Reviews, 2003).
