Overview

Biodegradation is the biochemical process by which organic substances are broken down by living organisms, primarily microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, into simpler components like carbon dioxide, water, and biomass (Wikipedia, 2023). This process is fundamental to the Earth's nutrient cycles and is extensively utilized in environmental science for the remediation of contaminated soil and water (EPA, 2023). In the context of pharmacology and toxicology, biodegradation refers to the biotransformation and metabolic breakdown of drugs or xenobiotics within an organism, often mediated by enzymatic systems such as the cytochrome P450 family (NCBI Bookshelf, 2021). However, biodegradation itself is categorized as a physiological or environmental phenomenon rather than a specific molecular target like a receptor, ion channel, or enzyme. Because it represents a collection of metabolic pathways and reactions rather than a discrete drug-binding site, it is not considered a valid therapeutic target for drug discovery (ScienceDirect, 2022).
