Overview

Bioelectrical impedance of body tissues refers to the measurement of electrical resistance and reactance in biological tissues, primarily for estimating body composition parameters such as fat mass, fat-free mass, and total body water. This measurement is performed by applying a small, safe, painless electrical current to the body and assessing how different tissues (fat, muscle, bone, water) impede the flow of current due to their varying water and electrolyte content. BIA is not a molecule or a biochemical target, but a clinical and research method used in evaluating body composition and occasionally fluid status or phase angle in various health conditions[1][2][3][4][5][7][9].
