01

Overview

Biofilm matrix proteins are a diverse group of extracellular and cell-associated proteins that play essential roles in the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of microbial biofilms. These proteins are key components of the biofilm extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix, which also includes polysaccharides, nucleic acids (eDNA), lipids, and other molecules. They facilitate initial attachment, mediate cell-cell adhesion, stabilize the biofilm structure, provide protection, and participate in enzymatic degradation. Targeting these proteins is a promising strategy for disrupting biofilms and increasing susceptibility to antibiotics.
