Biofuel

Biofuel refers to a broad category of combustible fuels derived from contemporary biomass, such as plant matter, agricultural waste, or microorganisms, rather than from fossilized organic matter [3, 6]. Common examples include bioethanol, biodiesel, and biogas, which are utilized as renewable energy sources to reduce reliance on petroleum-based fuels [1, 5]. In a biological or physiological context, the term is occasionally used to describe metabolic substrates, such as short-chain fatty acids (e.g., butyrate), which serve as primary energy sources for specific cells like colonocytes [4, 9]. However, Biofuel is not defined as a specific therapeutic target, receptor, or enzyme in human pharmacology or clinical medicine [10]. It is an incorrect term for a drug target because it describes a class of energy-carrying substances rather than a specific biological site of action for therapeutic intervention. While enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) are researched for powering implantable medical devices, the biofuel itself acts as the fuel for the device rather than a target for drug activity [11, 13].
