Overview

Biological tissues and proteins is a broad, non-specific term that refers to the fundamental structural and functional components of living organisms. Tissues are organized groups of cells that perform collective functions, such as epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissues (NIH, 2023). Proteins are the primary molecular machines within these tissues, serving as enzymes, receptors, and structural elements that maintain homeostasis (UniProt, 2024). In the context of pharmacology, a therapeutic target must be a discrete molecular entity, such as a specific receptor or enzyme, to allow for the development of selective ligands. Because this term encompasses the entire proteome and all histological structures, it cannot function as a single target for drug discovery. Targeting such a broad category would result in a total lack of specificity and severe systemic toxicity. Therefore, while tissues and proteins are the sites of drug action, they must be narrowed down to specific molecular targets for therapeutic relevance.
