Target intelligence / Profile preview
A biomarker profile, also referred to as a biomarker signature, is a collection of multiple biological indicators—such as genes, proteins, or metabolites—that collectively characterize a specific physiological state, disease condition, or response to a therapeutic intervention (NIH NCI, 2024). Unlike a single therapeutic target like a specific receptor or enzyme, a biomarker profile represents a data-driven overview of a biological system used for diagnostic, prognostic, or predictive purposes (FDA, 2024). These profiles are essential in precision medicine for identifying disease subtypes, determining the risk of disease progression, and selecting patients most likely to benefit from specific treatments (PubMed, 2023). For example, in oncology, multi-gene expression profiles are frequently used to guide chemotherapy decisions. Because a biomarker profile is a composite set of measurements rather than a single molecule, it does not function as a direct therapeutic target for drug interaction. Instead, it serves as a tool for monitoring the efficacy and safety of drugs that target the underlying molecular components represented within the profile.
Not applicable; this is a diagnostic concept rather than a therapeutic target molecule.
