Overview

Bioparticles is a broad, non-specific term referring to a wide range of biological or biologically-derived entities, including microorganisms like bacteria and yeast, extracellular vesicles such as exosomes, and engineered biological nanoparticles. In the context of pharmacology and drug discovery, bioparticles are typically utilized as research tools—such as fluorescently labeled substrates for phagocytosis assays—or as delivery vehicles for therapeutic agents rather than acting as a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme (Thermo Fisher Scientific, 2023). For instance, pH-sensitive bioparticles are widely used in high-throughput screening to measure the phagocytic activity of immune cells by fluorescing only upon internalization into acidic lysosomes. Because the term encompasses a diverse array of structures with varying compositions and functions, it lacks the molecular specificity required for a therapeutic target designation (Nature Reviews Materials, 2020). Their biological roles vary significantly depending on the type of particle, ranging from mediators of intercellular communication to pathogens or components of the immune response (Journal of Nanobiotechnology, 2021). Consequently, Bioparticles is considered an incorrect or overly broad entry for a specific drug target database as it does not represent a single protein, gene, or biochemical entity.
