01

Overview

Biphenyl-2,3-diol 1,2-dioxygenase is an iron(II)-dependent enzyme (EC 1.13.11.39) that catalyzes the first aromatic ring cleavage step in the microbial degradation of biphenyl and related compounds, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). It acts by incorporating two atoms of molecular oxygen into 2,3-dihydroxybiphenyl, producing 2-hydroxy-6-oxo-6-phenylhexa-2,4-dienoic acid, and plays a crucial role in environmental biodegradation and pollutant detoxification. It is not relevant as a human therapeutic target but is important in bioremediation processes. The corresponding gene, bphC, encodes this enzyme in bacteria such as Burkholderia xenovorans and Pseudomonas resinovorans.
