Bipolar Cell

Molecular classification
Interneuron
01

Overview

Bipolar cells are specialized interneurons found in the retina, serving as a critical relay between photoreceptors and ganglion cells. They transmit visual signals, integrate light information, and are specialized for different aspects of vision (e.g., rod vs. cone pathways). Unlike most neurons, they communicate using graded potentials. Dysfunctional signaling involving these interneurons can contribute to various forms of visual impairment.
