BIRC6 antisense RNA 2 (BIRC6-AS2)

Target
BIRC6-AS2
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA
01

Overview

BIRC6 antisense RNA 2 is a conserved long non-coding RNA composed of several exons that overlaps the intronic region of the protein-coding BIRC6 gene in antisense orientation. It is expressed predominantly in the developing brain and eye, with knockout and knockdown experiments in zebrafish embryos resulting in defects in brain and eye development, including expanded brain ventricles and loss of specific neuron populations. Its mechanism of action is likely related to regulation of gene expression, either by modulating transcription or splicing of nearby genes such as BIRC6, but may also involve broader regulation via chromatin organization as is characteristic of many lncRNAs. There is no current evidence that BIRC6-AS2 serves as a therapeutic target, nor are there drugs or biomarkers in clinical use associated with its modulation.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable for direct drug interaction; the mechanism is believed to be regulation of gene expression through antisense transcript interactions, possibly by influencing splicing or chromatin organization on the BIRC6 locus
