Overview

Bitter taste receptor type 2 (T2R), also known as TAS2R, is a family of G protein-coupled receptors responsible for the detection of bitter compounds. These receptors are primarily expressed in taste receptor cells within the taste buds on the tongue but are also found in various non-gustatory tissues. They detect thousands of structurally diverse bitter substances, including plant alkaloids, drugs, toxins, and synthetic chemicals. Activation of T2Rs initiates a signaling cascade involving gustducin, PLCβ2, IP3, calcium release, and neurotransmitter release, ultimately leading to the perception of bitter taste and other physiological responses.
