BK polyomavirus early region precursor mRNA is a primary transcript produced from the early region of the BK polyomavirus genome. This transcript undergoes alternative splicing to produce separate mRNAs that encode the large T antigen, small t antigen, and truncated T antigen, which are viral regulatory proteins essential for viral DNA replication and manipulation of the host cell environment. The transcript, as a precursor mRNA, is further regulated by viral microRNAs (miRNAs) that cleave or repress early viral mRNAs to modulate replication and immune evasion.
