Overview

Bladder cancer-associated protein (BLCAP) is a highly conserved, small transmembrane protein involved in tumor suppression by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. Its expression is downregulated in various cancers, especially bladder and cervical cancer, and overexpression leads to growth arrest at the G1/S checkpoint and apoptosis via mechanisms involving RB1 (retinoblastoma protein), independently of p53 and NF-κB signaling. BLCAP modulates gene expression related to cell cycle and apoptosis and may be regulated by RNA editing (A-to-I) in multiple tissues, with altered editing or expression associated with cancer progression. BLCAP is under investigation as a diagnostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target.
