Disease Roles
Bladder Smooth Muscle Overview
Bladder smooth muscle, also known as the detrusor muscle, is the primary muscular component of the urinary bladder wall. It consists of bundles of smooth muscle fibers oriented in multiple directions, allowing for significant distension and contraction during urine storage and voiding. Excitability and contractility depend on a variety of ion channels expressed on UBSM cells, including voltage-gated calcium channels, potassium channels, and chloride channels.
Mechanism of Action
Modulation of smooth muscle contraction via various receptors and ion channels.
Biological Functions
Urine storage
Micturition
Bladder contraction
Bladder relaxation
Disease Associations
Overactive bladder syndrome
Urinary retention
Neurogenic bladder
Safety Considerations
- Altered bladder function can lead to urinary retention or incontinence.
- Adverse effects related to drugs affecting bladder smooth muscle (e.g., anticholinergics)
Interacting Drugs
Carbachol
