The bladder uroepithelium, also known as the urothelium, is the specialized stratified epithelium that lines the urinary tract, including the renal pelvis, ureters, and bladder [StatPearls]. Its primary biological function is to serve as a highly impermeable blood-urine barrier, preventing the reabsorption of toxic waste products and protecting underlying tissues from the chemical composition of urine [NIH]. This barrier is maintained by specialized apical "umbrella cells" and a unique layer of uroplakin proteins [PubMed]. Beyond its structural role, the urothelium acts as a sensory organ that responds to mechanical stretch and chemical stimuli by releasing signaling molecules like ATP and acetylcholine to communicate with the underlying nervous system [Nature Reviews Urology].
