Overview

The bladder urothelium immune response describes the dynamic set of cellular and molecular defense mechanisms deployed by the bladder lining (urothelium) to prevent infection, promote healing, and modulate inflammation. These defenses include a physical barrier (mucus, tight junctions, GAG layer), secretion of antimicrobial peptides and cytokines, recognition of pathogens via pattern recognition receptors (such as TLR4), and rapid recruitment of innate and adaptive immune cells (e.g., neutrophils, T cells). In pathological conditions like infection or cancer, the immune response of the bladder urothelium shapes disease progression, and components of this response are exploited for therapy, such as with intravesical BCG or immune checkpoint inhibitors in bladder cancer.
