BLK antisense RNA 1 (BLK-AS1)

Target
BLK-AS1
Molecular classification
Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense noncoding RNA, Natural antisense transcript (NAT)
01

Overview

BLK antisense RNA 1 (BLK-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA transcribed antisense to the BLK gene locus. As part of the lncRNA class, BLK-AS1 is implicated in the regulation of gene expression, potentially through cis- or trans-acting mechanisms, such as modulation of mRNA stability, chromatin structure, or epigenetic states[1][3][5]. Disease association studies link BLK-AS1 to systemic lupus erythematosus, suggesting a possible but as-yet-undefined regulatory role in immune cell biology or autoimmunity[3]. No direct therapeutic targeting of BLK-AS1 is established. As with other antisense RNAs, its dysregulation could contribute to disease through interference with gene expression, but research on its precise biological and disease functions remains limited.

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable as a direct drug target. As a molecule, BLK-AS1 may function via RNA-RNA interactions, RNA-protein interactions, or epigenetic regulation (typical of antisense lncRNAs).

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (cis or trans effects on mRNA processing, transcription regulation, epigenetic modulation)Potential influence on immune responses (as implied through disease associations)
04

Disease associations

Systemic lupus erythematosusOther immunological or autoimmune disorders are possible by analogy to related lncRNAs, but not directly established for BLK-AS1
