Target intelligence / Profile preview
Blood and plasma proteins and erythrocyte membrane proteins refers to a diverse assembly of proteins within the blood, including soluble plasma components and structural proteins of the red blood cell (RBC) membrane. Plasma proteins, such as human serum albumin and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, are essential for maintaining osmotic pressure and serving as carriers for hormones, fatty acids, and drugs (StatPearls, "Physiology, Plasma Proteins", 2023). Erythrocyte membrane proteins, including Band 3 (anion exchanger 1) and glycophorins, are critical for RBC shape, stability, and gas transport (NCBI, "Red Blood Cell Membrane Dynamics", 2021). In a pharmacological context, this group is primarily recognized for its role in drug-protein binding, which significantly influences a drug's volume of distribution and its free, therapeutically active concentration (PubMed, "Impact of Plasma Protein Binding on Drug Delivery", 2019). While these proteins are rarely the intended primary targets of therapy, their involvement in sequestration and transport makes them a fundamental consideration in pharmacokinetic modeling and the management of drug-drug interactions (NIH, "Drug Distribution", 2022).
