Overview

The blood cell plasma membrane is a dynamic lipid bilayer embedded with proteins such as transporters (e.g., band 3 anion exchanger), structural components (spectrin, actin, ankyrin, protein 4.1R), and glycoproteins/glycolipids that mediate recognition and adhesion[1][4][5]. This structure provides the cell with selective permeability, mechanical durability, deformability, and the ability to participate in cell signaling and communication. Defects or mismatches in membrane composition can lead to disease or immune dysfunction. It should be noted that “blood cell membrane” is not a molecular therapeutic target but a composite biological barrier containing many actual molecular targets within its structure[1][5][6].

Mechanism of action

For drugs: changes to membrane fluidity, permeability, or protein function by interacting with discrete membrane proteins or lipids. Some drugs bind to red cell membrane antigens, leading to immunologic removal
