Blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is the main sugar found in your blood and serves as the body's primary source of energy. It is derived from the food you eat; after digestion, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and released into the bloodstream. The body tightly regulates blood glucose levels to maintain metabolic homeostasis. Persistently high levels (hyperglycemia) are characteristic of diabetes mellitus—a group of diseases where either insufficient insulin is produced or there’s resistance to its effects—leading to chronic complications if untreated. Persistently low levels (hypoglycemia) can cause symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and if severe may be life-threatening.
