Furthermore, hepatic enzymes such as glucose-6-phosphatase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) are pivotal in controlling endogenous glucose production via gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis (PubMed, 2022). Because these enzymes are central to metabolic homeostasis, they are primary targets for pharmacological intervention in the management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the term refers to a collective class of enzymes rather than a single specific molecular target, making it a functional grouping used in metabolic research and drug classification.
