Overview

The Blood group Rh(D) polypeptide is a critical erythrocyte membrane component responsible for defining one’s “Rh-positive” status via expression of the highly immunogenic D antigen. Its proper function depends on interaction with other related membrane proteins such as RhAG. While best known for its role in transfusion compatibility and maternal-fetal medicine due to antibody formation risks when absent/mismatched between donor-recipient pairs, it also contributes structurally/functionally to red cell integrity—possibly acting as an ammonia transporter within a larger multiprotein complex.
