Blood lipids refer collectively to the various types of fat molecules found circulating in the bloodstream. The main classes include triglycerides, phospholipids, and sterols such as cholesterol. These molecules are transported through the blood primarily within complexes called lipoproteins—chylomicrons, very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Each class has distinct roles; for example, LDL delivers cholesterol to tissues while HDL removes excess cholesterol from cells for excretion. Abnormalities in blood lipid levels—such as elevated LDL ("bad" cholesterol) or triglycerides—are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases including coronary heart disease and stroke[3][4][7]. Measurement of these components forms the basis for diagnosing dyslipidemia and guiding therapy.
