Overview

Plasma water constitutes the majority (about 91–92%) of blood plasma, the straw-colored liquid portion of blood in which cells and plasma proteins are suspended[2][4][5][6][9]. It acts as the solvent for plasma components, allowing the transport of nutrients, electrolytes, hormones, metabolic wastes, and signaling molecules throughout the vascular system[1][2][4][5][6]. The water in plasma plays fundamental roles in maintaining vascular volume, osmotic balance, pH, blood pressure, and thermoregulation. Loss or excess of plasma water underpins common clinical conditions such as dehydration, edema, and circulatory shock, but plasma water is not itself a molecular therapeutic target nor is it cataloged as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][2][4][9].

Disease associations

Other (disturbances in plasma water content include dehydration, overhydration, hyponatremia, hypernatremia, shock, and edema, but plasma water itself is not a direct therapeutic target)

Safety considerations

Changes in plasma water volume can cause dehydration, fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, and impact pharmacokinetics of drugs but do not constitute drug target-related safety concerns
