Blood Volume Expansion via Colloid Effect

Molecular classification
Physiological Process, Pharmacological Mechanism
01

Overview

Blood volume expansion via the colloid effect refers to the use of intravenous solutions containing large, insoluble molecules (colloids) to increase and maintain intravascular blood volume. This is achieved by increasing the osmotic pressure within blood vessels, drawing water from the interstitial and intracellular spaces into the intravascular compartment, expanding plasma volume. It is primarily used for fluid resuscitation in hypovolemic states.
