Overview

Blood volume regulation is a physiologic process responsible for maintaining the adequate circulating blood volume needed to ensure tissue perfusion and homeostasis. It is mediated by the integrated actions of the renal system (regulating sodium and water reabsorption), cardiovascular system (regulating vascular tone and cardiac output), autonomic nervous system, and hormones such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and vasopressin (ADH)[1][3][7][9]. Drugs, notably diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, aldosterone antagonists, and vasopressin antagonists, act on components of this process, but "blood volume regulation" per se is not a single molecular drug target[7]. Blood volume regulation is a physiologic or functional process, not a molecular target; it encompasses numerous molecular targets that coordinate to maintain blood volume and pressure homeostasis[1][3][7][9].
