Overview

"Blue light filter" does **not** refer to a molecule, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or any canonical biological target. Instead, it describes a class of physical devices—such as coatings on eyeglasses or screen protectors—designed to reduce the transmission of high-energy visible (HEV) blue light (typically 400–450 nm wavelength) from artificial sources like LED screens and lighting[5][6][8]. These filters are marketed with claims that they can reduce digital eye strain and protect against potential retinal damage. However, current scientific evidence indicates that their effectiveness in improving visual performance or preventing retinal injury is limited; robust clinical data supporting their use are lacking[5][8]. "Blue light filter" is not a molecular entity and should not be considered a therapeutic target in the context of drug discovery or molecular pharmacology.

Safety considerations

Limited evidence for efficacy in preventing eye strain or retinal damage[5][8]May provide a false sense of security regarding digital eye strain and circadian disruption[5][8]
