Overview

Blue light incident on the macula refers to the exposure of the central retina to high-energy visible (HEV) light, typically in the 400 to 500 nanometer wavelength range (PubMed: 29145555). While this light is necessary for high-acuity vision and the regulation of circadian rhythms via melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells, it is also a significant source of oxidative stress (NIH: NEI). Chronic exposure can lead to the photochemical degradation of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors, often mediated by the accumulation of lipofuscin fluorophores like A2E (Molecular Vision: 19165731). Therapeutic strategies do not target the light itself as a molecule but rather focus on increasing the density of macular pigments (lutein and zeaxanthin) which act as internal filters to mitigate this incident light (StatPearls: NBK541069). Clinical trials such as AREDS2 have demonstrated that supplementing these pigments can help protect against the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by reducing the impact of blue light-induced damage (NIH: AREDS2).
