Target intelligence / Profile preview
Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) is a double-stranded RNA virus of the genus Orbivirus and family Sedoreoviridae. It is one of at least 36 officially characterized serotypes that cause Bluetongue disease, an acute, sometimes fatal, disease of ruminants primarily affecting sheep and cattle. BTV-3 contains a segmented genome encoding multiple structural (VP1–VP7) and non-structural proteins (NS1–NS5). Its serotype is determined chiefly by segment 2, which encodes the highly variable VP2 protein responsible for serotype specificity and is the principal target for neutralizing antibodies. The geographic spread of BTV-3 includes Africa, the Mediterranean Basin, North America (western topotype), and Asia-Pacific (eastern topotype), with reassortment and mutation contributing to its emergence in new regions. Disease outbreaks are typically associated with transmission by Culicoides biting midges, with vaccination strategies providing the main control but challenged by the virus’s genetic diversity and reassortment capabilities.
Vaccines: Induce immunity against virus capsid proteins that determine serotype specificity (VP2 and VP5). No classic "mechanism of action" as for therapeutic targets.
