Overview

BMF antisense RNA 1 (BMF-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the Bcl-2 modifying factor (BMF) gene. It is involved in regulating BMF expression at the post-transcriptional level and thereby modulates cellular apoptosis, vascular calcification, and cell senescence under disease conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes. BMF-AS1 exerts its effects by stabilizing or enhancing BMF mRNA and protein expression, with knockdown of BMF-AS1 leading to reduced apoptosis and attenuation of vascular aging in disease models. There is no evidence BMF-AS1 is a direct target of any approved drugs; it is an emerging disease-relevant molecular regulator with potential as a diagnostic biomarker or future therapeutic target for RNA-targeting approaches.

Mechanism of action

BMF-AS1 modulates BMF mRNA stability/expression, with downstream effects on apoptosis and cellular aging. No known small molecule or biologic drug mechanism exists; however, RNA interference or antisense oligonucleotides could be potential approaches for targeting.
